Getting a Quick View of the situation

QuickView is a simple, but effective, assessment tool developed by the New York Manufacturing Extension Partnership (New York MEP) Program to help small and medium-sized manufacturing companies better understand the problems and opportunities confronting their operations. A client's responses to this questionnaire are plugged into a database that compares them against over 3500 manufacturing companies' standards. The company's performance profile is also compared to companies within their specific SIC classification.The report is used to help identify those operational areas that may need some attention; identify areas for capital and time investment; highlight some of the non-technical parts of the operation that may be impeding the company's growth and competitiveness; and, identify areas where the MEP center may offer assistance.

The latest version of QuickView includes an analysis of 12 operational areas:

  • Management Practices (e.g., procedures, strategy, organizational structure)
  • Human Resources (e.g., procedures, training)
  • Market Management (e.g., customer service, trends)
  • Bidding/Quoting (e.g., procedures, record keeping)
  • Purchasing (e.g., materials management, supplier relations)
  • Engineering/Design (e.g., procedures, technology)
  • Operations Management (e.g., scheduling, delivery)
  • Manufacturing Technology (e.g., equipment, tools, tolerances, maintenance procedures)
  • Maintenance (e.g., repairs, calibration checks)
  • Quality Management (e.g., performance, procedures)
  • Pollution Prevention and Waste Minimization (e.g., "green manufacturing," training)
  • Information Management (e.g., how information is handled, technology support and training)

In addition, a section on general performance is included. A section on ecommerce is also being considered.

QuickView has been so successful that the National Institute of Standards and Technology of the U.S. Department of Commerce has designated it as a national model for industry assessments; QuickView is now in use in 38 states.
